Princess Noguk was the queen of King Gongmin, the 31st king of Goryeo, and her birth name was Borjigin Budashiri. She was a member of the Yuan (an old Chinese dynasty) imperial family (royal family) and played a crucial role in strengthening political relations between Goryeo and Yuan.
Let's delve into the life and achievements of Princess Noguk.
Birth and Marriage
Princess Noguk was born as the daughter of Prince Beir Temur of Yuan. Her exact birth year is not known, but in 1349 (the 1st year of King Chungjeong's reign), she married King Gongmin and was granted the title of Princess Seungui (a title for princesses). At that time, King Gongmin was living in Yuan as a hostage, and his marriage to Princess Noguk was a significant event that strengthened political ties between Goryeo and Yuan.
Life and Devotion as Queen
Princess Noguk returned to Goryeo with King Gongmin and began her life as queen. She was known for her quiet and graceful (dignified and polite) demeanor and served as queen for 15 years, fulfilling her duties (responsibilities) as the consort (role of the queen). When King Gongmin implemented anti-Yuan policies (policies against Yuan), she distanced herself from her homeland (Yuan) and supported her husband. This significantly helped strengthen King Gongmin's political position (status).
Political Support and Overcoming Crises
Princess Noguk supported King Gongmin's political endeavors and protected him during several crises. In 1352 (the 1st year of King Gongmin's reign), during Jo Il-shin's rebellion, and in 1363 (the 12th year of King Gongmin's reign), during the Heungwangsa rebellion, she protected King Gongmin with her own body. Especially during the Heungwangsa rebellion, when the enemies attempted to assassinate (kill) King Gongmin, Princess Noguk sat at the door to protect him. The enemies could not harm her as she was a princess of Yuan, and thus, King Gongmin's life was spared.
The Issue of Heirs and Difficult Childbirth
Princess Noguk made numerous efforts to have an heir (child). In 1353 (the 2nd year of King Gongmin's reign), she visited Bokryeongsa and Heungseongsa temples to pray for an heir and offered sacrifices to the stars of Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo (constellation stars). Despite her efforts, she could not conceive, so the officials (government officers) suggested that King Gongmin take a concubine (another wife for the king). Although she permitted this, she later regretted it and exhibited jealousy (envy) and refused to eat. Eventually, in 1365 (the 14th year of King Gongmin's reign), Princess Noguk became pregnant, and King Gongmin was greatly pleased by the news of an heir. However, during childbirth, she experienced a difficult labor (difficulty in giving birth), resulting in a miscarriage (loss of the child before birth), and she passed away. Her death brought immense sorrow to King Gongmin, and he had her portrait (painting) drawn and hung on the wall, gazing at it day and night with longing.
Posthumous Memorial and Legacy
After Princess Noguk's death, King Gongmin held a grand funeral following the precedent (custom) of Empress Jegukdaejang, the consort of King Chungnyeol. Her posthumous title (name given after death) was initially 'Indeokgongmyeongjayeseon'anwangtaehu,' but later, Yuan bestowed upon her the title 'Hui-ui Nogukdaejang Princess.' Her tomb (grave) is located at Jeongneung in Haeseon-ri, Gaepung-gun, Hwanghae Province.
Contribution to Political Stability and Development
Princess Noguk significantly contributed to the political stability and development of Goryeo. Her dedication and wisdom are an essential part of Goryeo's history. Thus, she is remembered as a great queen who contributed to the development of Goryeo along with King Gongmin, reminding us of the importance of dedication and trust.
